Peter Dutton has emerged as an early favourite to become the next opposition leader after outgoing prime minister Scott Morrison announced he would be stepping down.
Mr Morrison conceded defeat on Saturday night, confirming he will stand aside as Liberal Party leader but will stay on in parliament as member for Cook.
Mr Dutton is projected to hold onto his Queensland seat of Dickson.
